Recompound Grill Porto

Which stocks are worth holding, and which are just being waited out?

Most people ask for a portfolio review for one reason: they are not sure about what is in it.

Budi Ryan, an OJK-licensed Investment Adviser, goes through it stock by stock and scores it, so you know exactly what risk you own, then decide for yourself: accept it, or replace it. Pay once, Rp500,000.

Two things, within 5 working days.

So you know what you own, and why.

A 15–20-minute Loom video

Our screen, our voice. We open your portfolio and discuss each stock: the business, your buy price, its weight, and the risk that comes with it. Watch any time, rewatch any time.

A written report (PDF)

A score on five sides and an overall score. Every stock graded with a hold-or-sell decision, and the reasons. Whether to accept the risk is your decision. Sample below.

Needs work

The average of the five sides below. What holds it back most: buy prices, and a portfolio that is crowded rather than spread.

The same scoring for every portfolio, so you can compare.

BUSINESSPRICEDIVERSIFICATIONFITPROCESS
  • Business prospects3.0 / 5

Four good businesses, seven ordinary, five not yet profitable. The largest holding is also the best.

  • Buy price2.0 / 5

Half the money went in above value (Budi's estimate of what the company is worth, from its normal earnings). Falling far from the buy price does not make a stock cheap.

  • Diversification2.5 / 5

16 stocks, but 47% in commodities that rise and fall together. Crowded, not spread.

  • Fit with your life4.0 / 5

Full-time job, checks the portfolio once a month. A good fit, as long as the holdings need no daily watching.

  • Decision process2.0 / 5

Most were bought because they were trending. Six positions under 1% are the trace. This can be learned.

What we see: 16 stocks, 47% in commodities

Commodities: coal, nickel, gold, palm oil, petrochemicals. When world prices fall, all of them fall together. Trending stocks: 5 stocks are down more than half from the buy price. Too many: 6 positions under 1%, too small to matter to the result. In the right place: Stock A, and three other stocks priced below value.

3

What to hold, what to replace

Each stock is judged on two things: the business, and the price against the company's value. From that, every stock falls into one grade.

Sample · invented figures
  • SGreat business, cheap price
  • AGood business, fair price
  • BHold what you have, do not add
  • CBetter replaced
  • DCareful, the money may not come back

Value is worked out from normal earnings: how many years of earnings are worth paying, at most 15. Overvalued means the price is above value, however far it has fallen from its peak. The grade judges the stock; the decision judges its place in your portfolio.

A

Stock A · Bank · Good business, fair price

Business
A large bank with stable earnings and regular dividends. Profit dipped while bad loans were cleaned up, then rose again.
Price
Below value At today's price a buyer pays about 7 years of earnings. Budi puts value at about 1.8 times today's price; even your buy price is still below value.
Weight
28% weight · −12.4% The largest position. The weight is right: meaningful without making everything depend on one stock.
Decision
Hold Hold all of it. Do not add; money from the stocks sold goes to other sectors.
B

Stock B · Coal · Hold what you have, do not add

Business
A coal miner with more cash than debt and a large dividend. But its profit follows the world coal price.
Price
Below value From normal earnings plus net cash, today's price is about 0.6 times value.
Weight
14% weight · −8.1% Cheap and cash-rich, but this portfolio already has too much in commodities.
Decision
Hold Hold, do not add.
C

Stock C · Nickel · Better replaced

Business
Large revenue, very thin profit because the nickel price fell. Debt close to equity. Has never paid a dividend.
Price
Overvalued A buyer still pays about 25 years of normal earnings. Today's price is about 2.5 times value; your buy price was 4.5 times value.
Weight
12% weight · −44.3% The third-largest position, in a thin-margin business. Falling far from the buy price does not make it cheap.
Decision
Sell Sell all of it. The same money works better in a business with real profits priced below value.
C

Stock D · Property · Better replaced

Business
A large township developer. Profit comes from land sales, so it is lumpy from year to year.
Price
Overvalued Today's price is about 2 times value. When you bought, the market paid dozens of times earnings.
Weight
9% weight · −47.0% The projects run; the problem is the price.
Decision
Sell Sell all of it.
D

Stock E · Gold and copper mining · Careful, the money may not come back

Business
Losses three years running; only the latest quarter was profitable, helped by the gold price. Debt more than twice equity.
Price
Cannot be valued yet We give no value: there are no normal earnings to use yet, and one profitable quarter is not enough.
Weight
8% weight · −35.2% Depends on one heavily indebted group.
Decision
Sell Sell all of it. A business that already earns, with debt under control, is a better place for this money.

Two more stocks to hold, and nine others to sell

Value is worked out the same way: normal earnings per year times the years worth paying, plus net cash where there is any.

StockWeightFrom buy priceWhat we seeDecision
B Stock FPalm oil7%−14.8%Debt-free palm oil with large net cash; price 0.7 times value. A commodity, so not added to.Hold
C Stock GPetrochemicals6%−41.9%Last year's profit came from a single quarter, with losses the three years before; price 4 times value.Sell all
A Stock HTelecoms5%−23.7%Stable profits and dividends; only the sector's sentiment has fallen. Price 0.8 times value.Hold
D Stock IConstruction4%−58.3%Debt far beyond its ability to pay. We give it no value.Sell all
D Stock JDigital bank3%−66.1%Unsecured lending, never profitable. We give it no value.Sell all
6 other stocks, each under 1%4%Together 4% of the portfolio. Priced far above value, or with no normal earnings. Positions this small make no difference to the result.Sell all
